Bublé Bubbles To The Top

Michael Bublé has bubbled to the top of Radio Clatterbridge's request chart for 2011. The Canadian singer only just scraped into the previous year's countdown - at number 25. But a flurry of requests over the last twelve months for Haven't Met You Yet ensures that Bublé is top of the pops in the year's most wanted songs. Meanwhile, Frank Sinatra is the most requested artist over all and Luciano Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma is the top of the classical chart. You can see the full chart here.

Christmas Presence

Once again, Radio Clatterbridge will be broadcasting right across the festive season this year with a range of special programmes. In the week before the big day, listen out for Carols at Christmas. The festive fun continues on Christmas Eve, with a special Coffee Club with Steve Evans at 10am, followed by John Roberts' Christmas Eve Special at midday. Beth Merdith is live on Christmas morning with festive music and a chance for you to hear the Carol Concert from the Clatterbridge Hospital Chapel from 10am. Steve Lord is live from midday, finding out what's happening across the health park on the big day. Liam Phoenix joins the Coffee Club on Boxing Day, while June Wood has a special edition of Stage and Screen from midday. At noon on New Years' Eve, Andy Bonner will be counting down The Year's Greatest Hits. Paul Johnston will reveal the 30 most-requested songs of 2011 from 4pm. The Jingle Belles (Sarah Jones, Nat Kelly, Bethan Meredith and the aptly-named Holly Youlton) make their annual outing on New Year's Day at 2pm.

A Grand Christmas

Merseyside-based pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly has given an early Christmas present to Radio Clatterbridge. Station volunteer John Roberts met with company bosses at its manufacturing base in Speke to give a presentation about the charity and its work. Bosses were so impressed that they have agreed to donate £1,000 to the station. John's life-long friend Derek Cross works in the technical engineering section at Lilly's. The pair met at Port Sunlight Boys' Club. Radio Clatterbridge was one of a 45 charities to receive a share of over £50,000. The site has had a long history of payroll giving. Each employee pound is matched by the company.

We're On Telly Too!

Radio Clatterbridge has extended its reach further into Clatterbridge Health Park, after being reconnected to the Teenage and Young Adult ward. The station now appears via bedside touch-screen televisions. Young patients wanting to listen in can now press the button number 1 to access the service and see a gallery of pictures from the station. Listeners across the health park can still receive Radio Clatterbridge on normal radios by tuning in to 1386AM.

A Royal Appointment

Patients were able to join in the celebrations as the Queen visited Wirral today, thanks to coverage by Radio Clatterbridge. Andy Bonner presented the first hour of the Afernoon Edition from New Brighton where Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh toured the Floral Pavilion theatre. Members of the public shared their experience with listeners stuck in hospital for the big day.

Claire House has the X Factor

Radio Clatterbridge is helping publicise this year's X Factor charity single, after three brothers from Claire House appeared on the hit TV show. Sam, Dan and Tom Lloyd - who all have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy - were filmed talking about the good work of the children's hospice. Radio Clatterbridge listeners today heard Andy Bonner's interview with the boys on Afternoon Edition. The teenagers have previously visited the studios a number of times. Lighting Up Lives

As the days grow shorter, Radio Clatterbridge is helping light up the lives of its listeners by promoting a number of events on the health park in the weeks before Christmas. The station broadcast from the Claire House Christmas Fair on Sunday. Liam Phoenix and Graeme White covered the various events at the children's hospice. Radio Clatterbridge finally went on air today - 60 years after the station was formed! Special guest Mike McCartney pressed the button to switch on our new AM transmitter. Chairman Steve Lord was the first voice to be heard on the new service as he thanked everyone involved in getting the station broadcasting. Guests from Wirral Hospitals NHS Trust, Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology, Clatterbridge Hospitals League of Friends, Claire House, St. John's Hospice, Elderholme, Wirral Neuro Rehab and sponsors Home Instead listened in during a reception at the station. One of Radio Clatterbridge's founding members, Monty Lister, joined Mike McCartney and presenter Andy Bonner in the studio for the first full programme. Steve Lord later returned to the airwaves with a series of outside broadcasts from around Clatterbridge Health Park. He interviewed fundraisers from CCO, Claire House and St. John's... along with the Matron. Steve even ended up in the bedrooms of two residents at Elderholme! Thanks to Steve Lord, Paul Johnston, Dave Adams, Andy Bonner, Neil Jackson, Ron Berkeley and Dave Berkeley who ensured the launch came together as planned.

AM Programmes Revealed

A series of special programmes will air on Radio Clatterbridge this Monday to mark the switch on of the station's new AM (Medium Wave) service. Chairman Steve Lord will launch the service at 1pm with the help of special guest Mike McCartney. Andy Bonner will then interview Mike and play some of his favourite songs. Listeners will also get the chance to hear Andy's interview with Paul O'Grady. At 3pm, there's another chance to catch the Radio Clatterbridge Story, produced to mark 60 years of the station. Steve Lord returns with his Tea Time Show with interviews from around Clatterbridge Health Park. Then at 6, a team of presenters present a specially extended Live At The Bridge featuring requests and dedications.

The project to get Radio Clatterbridge on the air next month has taken a step closer with the installation of the station's new aerial. The one watt low-powered mast is essentially just a 10 metre high fibre glass pole. From next month it will allow us to broadcast on 1386AM (Medium Wave) within Clatterbridge Health Park. Radio Clatterbridge's move on to AM (Medium Wave) will take place next month. The ground-work for the station's new mast in Clatterbridge Health Park begins today. It's hoped the new transmitter will be up and running for test transmissions within the next few weeks. The move will for the first time allow patients across the site to hear the service. Presenter Phil Rostance has booked a new guest for the Coffee Club - Michael Stanton from Linghams Booksellers in Heswall. Michael joined Phil for a review of some of the current best-sellers, including a healthy eating book by Michael Van Straten called "Super Food, Super Juice, Super Health" as well as "The Sisters Brothers" by Patrick de Witt which was shortlisted for the Booker 2011 prize. Michael also spoke about the Heswall Arts Week which starts on 15 October and lasts for a fortnight.

Coffee Club presenter John Roberts has been waxing lyrical about Radio Clatterbridge to listeners in the Isle of Man. The charity has always had a strong connection with the island, ever since local cancer patients were treated at Clatterbridge. Manx Radio stalwart Bernie Quayle is a recent Radio Clatterbridge listener, having received treatment at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology. So John thought it would be a good idea to pay a visit to their studios in Douglas. He told presenter John Hines all about the station and our plans to broadcast on AM later this year. Both Johns now hope to arrange a reciprocal visit to Clatterbridge at some point in the future.

Patient Helps Patients

A hospital patient who was treated for breast cancer at Clatterbridge has used Radio Clatterbridge to share her experiences with others. Mo Ferrer contacted the station through Twitter after reading that bosses at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology had discussed finding patients to help others through their treatment. The 54 year old talked to Coffee Club presenter John Roberts about being off work for 10 months while she underwent chemo and radiotherapy. But Mo's message was that life is for living and there's no room for negative thinking. She was so impressed with the service that Radio Clatterbridge offers that she's now considering volunteering with the charity in her own time.

New Frequency Awarded

Ofcom, the UK's independent communications regulator, has awarded Radio Clatterbridge a frequency on the AM (Medium Wave) band to broadcast programmes to Clatterbridge Health Park. It means that for the first time in its 60 year history, the station will soon be available for anybody in the area with a normal radio. Hospital patients currently hear the output via a closed-circuit landline system, restricting the potential audience. The charity is now liaising with hospital authorities to build a transmitter on the site. It's hoped the first programmes will be broadcast on 1386AM before the end of the year.

Presenter and Programme Controller Paul Johnston got married today, and ensured he was joined by a number of his friends from Radio Clatterbridge for the happy occasion. Paul married Cath Dufton at Liverpool Town Hall this afternoon, with fellow presenter Andy Bonner his Best Man. Two other on air colleagues, Paul Size and Neil Jackson, were Paul's ushers. Everyone at the station wishes Paul and Cath a long and happy life together.

Wirral Acoustic Roots band Elbow Jane were special guests on In The Mix earlier. Radio Clatterbridge listeners were given an exclusive preview of their forthcoming album The Boldest Blood including the title track which was played live in the studio. It is about bravery in battle and the loss suffered by families and friends during times of war. The Band are supporting the national charity Help for Heroes. Citing their various inspirations, amongst other songs played live was Shower the People - the James Taylor classic. People being treated for cancer at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology could soon receive advice from former patients over the airwaves. Radio Clatterbridge is hoping to link up with a number of men and women who can share their therapy stories on air. It follows a meeting between the NHS Trust and station bosses this week. It comes as former stroke patient Dave Holmes paid another visit to the studios. Dave talked frankly and openly to Coffee Club presenter John Roberts about his experience on the Stroke Rehabilitation ward at Clatterbridge Hospital. Treating Yourself Well

Radio Clatterbridge made sure listeners didn't miss out on the Health Park's first ever Treating Yourself Well day. The entire site was transformed into a mini Olympics site in a drive to encourage staff and their families to become more fit and healthy. Hundreds of people took part in events including yoga, basketball, netball, golf and football. Presenter Paul Johnston interviewed organisers to find out more about the event and spoke to Matt Williams (pictured centre) who won the road race which took place around the site. Mask Campaign Launched

Radio Clatterbridge is backing the campaign to help hundreds of head and neck cancer patients in the Health Park. Clatterbridge Your Cancer Centre wants the public to help raise £100,000 towards the appeal for a new Mask Moulding Unit at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology. Manager of the department Dr Keiran Wood and fundraiser Marie Turnbull popped into the studio this morning to talk about the procedure. They told John Roberts how patients wear the masks to protect other non cancerous parts of their body from the radiation used in treatment. The department where the work is undertaken is over 40 years old and in desperate need of refurbishment. The fund-raising campaign was launched by comedian and actor Ricky Tomlinson. Sarah Russell married Kirk Jones this month in Tuscany and, after a honeymoon taking in Kuala Lumpur, Borneo and Bali, was joined at her reception in Hulme Hull, Port Sunlight by Dave, Nat & Beth from the station. Live music was provided by Matt Johnson (formerly in the boy band One True Voice) who gave a great rendition of Me And Mrs Jones to accompany the happy couple's first dance. The previously unseen image dates from 1972 when the charity was celebrating coming of age. A solid brass "21" key was presented to the team, including our current President Roger Hazlewood (far left). The find follows an appeal made for archive material earlier this year.

Presenters, committee members and even the station librarian turned up to have their pictures taken by local photographer Linda Pelling. Our very own Programme Controller celebrated 15 years at the station. Paul Johnston was previously involved in Scunthorpe Hospital Broadcasting, a radio station at Doncaster and MFM. Chairman Steve Lord and Treasurer Dave Adams ambushed him at the studio today. Steve thanked him for his ongoing contribution to the station, reminded him of his early days assigned to Andy Bonner and presented him with a certificate from the Hospital Broadcasting Association.

Walkers Have A Blast

Radio Clatterbridge volunteers had a blast, quite literally, when they took part in the 2011 Wirral Coastal Walk. The team were on a 15-mile trek to raise money for the station. However, the wind was so bad at one point that they were being blasted by sand as they walked along the north Wirral coastline. Staff and patients holding a street party to mark the Royal wedding featured on a special programme to mark the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Presenter Paul Johnston visited Stroke Rehab where they were preparing to celebrate Prince William and Kate Middleton's big day. Birthday Weekend Success

Radio Clatterbridge's 60th birthday weekend has been deemed a huge success. The station was formed in 1951 when young members of the Port Sunlight Boys’ Club first took a pile of 78rpm records around Pensby Ward. Co-founder Monty Lister was special guest in the studios on Saturday. Mr Lister, who is known to many listeners as the former presenter of Radio Merseyside’s show Tune Tonic, began his broadcasting career at the hospital station by reading out song requests for patients. He revived that role at the weekend, introducing a Cliff Richard record. He also shared a story about how Cliff once ended up listening to records at his house after taking the young singer to visit patients.

Radio Clatterbridge has broadcast a special programme documenting the station's illustrious history. The Radio Clatterbridge Story was researched and presented by Andy Bonner to mark the charity's 60th anniversary. It features many long-unheard clips of archive loaned to the station by various former presenters. The documentary also contains the first-known recording of the service - a 1954 feature called the Clatterbridge Chronicle and talks about how stars from Bill Haley and Eddie Cochrane to Kenny Everett and Jimmy Saville made their mark on the station. The programme will be repeated throughout the anniversary year.

One of the oldest radio stations in the country, Radio Clatterbridge is celebrating its 60th anniversary today with a series of special programmes. It all began on April 9th 1951 with a group of youngsters from the Port Sunlight Boys' Club hauling a gramophone and a heavy pile of 78s around Pensby Ward. Since then, the charity has evolved into a full broadcast service for the health park. One of the station's founders, broadcaster Monty Lister, joined a variety of special guests on a special edition of In The Mix ths morning. Presented by Dave Adams and Steve Lord, the programme talked about why the Beatles gave their first broadcast interview to Monty in 1962 and looked at other events in the station's history.

Hunt For Hidden Archive

Rare interviews with some of the biggest names in show business could be amongst a hidden archive of recordings made especially for Radio Clatterbridge. We are trying to uncover what recordings still exist as we prepare to celebrate the station’s 60th anniversary next month. Over the years, presenters have interviewed everyone from Billy Fury to Gerry Marsden and The Beatles but many of the tapes have since disappeared. Now we are appealing for help from those former presenters to try to recover the missing audio. It will be used in a special programme tracing the history of the station. Fresh Start For Breakfast

Three new programmes hit the Radio Clatterbridge airwaves from today, giving mornings a fresh sound for listeners. Dave Williams will be first on every day with a new show called Light and Early from 5-7am on weekdays and 6-8am at the weekend. It will feature relaxing music plus a preview of what's ahead on the station during the day. Paul Johnston takes over the slot vacated by Dave on the weekday breakfast show. Join him from 7-10am each morning with the best music to wake up to, a look at what's happening locally in The Guide and some of the biggest hits from a featured artist in Five from One. And Paul Size makes a return to the station with weekend breakfast, every Saturday and Sunday from 8-10am. He will also be dipping into the newspapers and looking ahead to the day's sporting action. At Radio Clatterbridge, we have always prided ourselves in playing the music that our listeners want to hear. Now we have taken this to a new level, by playing tracks actually composed by one of our listeners. Request collector Richie Calvert was on Mersey Ward when he got chatting to musician and writer Francis Wyatt. Francis has written a charity EP in aid of Alder Hey Childrens' Hospital in Liverpool, so we thought it was only fair to play some of his songs at Radio Clatterbridge. It's hoped the phrase, which was unveiled to members at the charity's Annual General Meeting this evening, will accurately represent it's core audience. Extra editions of the Clatterbridge Coffee Club will keep entertained those who are unfortunate enough to be stuck in hospital. June Wood and Ron Berkeley will be live in the studio on Christmas Day. Andy Bonner presents the Year's Greatest Hits on new Year's Eve and Paul Johnston will count down the most requested songs during 2010. Mast Plan Approved

Radio Clatterbridge has reached another important milestone in its bid to broadcast to the entire health park. The charity has had its application to build a transmitter near the studios approved by Wirral Council. Bosses now need to apply for a licence to broadcast before the mast can be built. It's hoped AM (Medium Wave) transmissions will begin some time next year, when the station celebrates its 60th anniversary.

The exciting events on Coronation Street have captivated millions of TV viewers this week, but two friends of Radio Clatterbridge were watching the events in Weatherfield particularly closely. Clatterbridge Coffee Club presenter Elaine Leaning was able to watch her husband take part in the live episode of the soap last night. Actor Simon Smithies played a fireman who was sent in to try to rescue trapped mum Molly Dobbs. Elaine says she was relieved to see that he didn't fluff his lines! Meanwhile, former Radio Clatterbridge presenter Gareth Philips was also watching Corrie with added interest. Gareth works on rival soap Hollyoaks but was previously a Series Editor on the Street, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Gareth told us "It's great to be have played a big part in a programme which means so much to so many."

Organisers popped in to the studios to promote the day on Graeme White's programme. Presenter Ian Grant gave up his time to provide music throughout the afternoon at the hospice. The family of Pt Dougie Halliday organised today's coastal walk in aid of the charity. Three of his colleagues also died when their vehicle overturned in Afghanistan. Pt Halliday's cousin Helen Fisher spoke to presenter Graeme White from the 15-mile sponsored trek between Seacombe and Thurstaston earlier. Friends old and new joined Dave Adams today as he celebrated 20 years at Radio Clatterbridge. A former chairman of the charity, Dave first joined the station in 1990 to assist Dave Williams. Sinning In The Studio

Sundays may normally be reserved for more ecclesiastical thoughts, but the Radio Clatterbridge studios were taken over this morning by a real pair of sinners. Listeners were treated to live music from a local duo called The Cheerful Sinners. Singers Steph and Ste treated patients to renditions of The Beatles' Something and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John. The pair also told presenter Andy Bonner about their ambition to take part in a bed-in at The Bluecoat in Liverpool in December to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of John Lennon. A close friend of the Beatles re-lived the early days of the band for Radio Clatterbridge listeners today. Astrid Kirchherr, who was the fiancée of "fifth Beatle" Stuart Sutcliffe, spoke to Andy Bonner on the first day of the Mathew Street Festival about her new exhibition of photographs of the group during their time in Hamburg. Kirchherr, who was portrayed in the film Backbeat, told Andy how she had fond memories of the era. Radio Clatterbridge carried the first broadcast interview with the Beatles shortly after Ringo Starr joined the group. Astrid Kirchherr's exhibition can be seen at the Victoria Gallery & Museum in Liverpool.

Radio Clatterbridge has been highlighting how quick action can make a big difference when someone suffers a stroke. Sports enthusiast Dave Holmes from Wirral was invited in to the studio by presenter John Roberts to share his experiences. A former Captain of Bromborough Golf Club, Dave had a stroke last December. He told listeners how the Stroke Association's FAST campaign helped him on to the road to recovery. Radio Clatterbridge has gone digital, and got a brand new young audience in the process! The new Teen and Young Adult Unit at the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology has now opened its doors. The award, named after the League’s former president who died in 2000, is presented biennially to departments or organisations which play a major contribution to hospital life. The new MP for Wirral South, the constituency which covers Clatterbridge Health Park, has made her first visit in to the Radio Clatterbridge studios. Alison McGovern, who was born in the hospital, was a special guest on Andy Bonner's new programme Open Air. Radio Clatterbridge volunteers have claimed victory after a gruelling 15-mile hike on the hottest day of the year so far. The group of plucky pedestrians were taking part in the annual Wirral Walk around the coastline from Seacombe to Thurstaston. We're told the complimentary ice cream at Caldy went down well. The team finished the walk in just over five hours and managed to raise nearly £800 for the charity.

Radio Clatterbridge's plans to begin broadcasting to the entire Clatterbridge Health Park for the first time in its history have moved a vital step forward. The charity has secured capital funding for the set-up of a new AM transmitter on site. Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology's Charitable Trust is providing £5,000. The Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Radio Clatterbridge will provide £3,000 each. Efforts are continuing to raise money for running costs. The station will now apply for planning permission. If successful, it's hoped Radio Clatterbridge will be broadcasting in time for the charity's 60th birthday in April 2011.

New View For Kitchen Firm

Radio Clatterbridge has tonight benefited from the hard work of Wirral's Scouts & Guides. The Christmas Charity Post 2009 Presentation Evening was held at Wallasey Town Hall. Dave Adams accepted a cheque for £1,000 from the Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Andrew Hodson, and gave a short acceptance speech highlighting what we do. Paul Johnston mingled amongst the charities and Scout Post organisers and recorded a series of interviews for broadcast. Christmas 2009 saw the hard work of hundreds of scouts and guides raise a record £25,000. The total money has been split between 22 good causes.

Dream Team Goes Green?

You could be forgiven for thinking Radio Clatterbridge's Magical Memories programme has gone all environmentally-friendly by saving a bit of electricity. But in fact this strange photo of John Roberts and his "dream team", taken in a dark Studio One last week, has more devious roots. Apparently John likes to present the request show with the lights dimmed low. So request collector Richie Calvert brought in a miner's light to help him read his dedications. What Richie didn't know was that the rest of the team also had head torches. The result was probably the first Radio Clatterbridge programme to be produced by torch-light... and a swift promise to put the studio lights on properly in the future!

Radio Clatterbridge could be transmitting its programmes over the airwaves for the first time in its history by the end of the year. That was the bold assessment by new Chairman Steve Lord as he presented an update on plans to broadcast on AM (or Medium Wave) at the charity's Annual General Meeting last night. The move is still subject to funding, licensing and planning permission but if all goes well, the station could be transmitting a signal some time in 2010. Radio Clatterbridge programmes are currently heard only through a hard-wired land line system at bedsides. A new on-site transmitter would mean that the charity could broadcast to every single person at Clatterbridge Health Park.

Lording It Up

Radio Clatterbridge will be lording it up over the next 12 months after Steve Lord was voted to become the charity's new chairman. The news comes after Dave Adams announced he was to step down from the role after two years. The vote took place at the station's Annual General Meeting this evening. Steve will join Programme Controller Paul Johnston and Treasurer Sarah Russell on the Executive Committee.

Bethan Meredith is back on the boards for another Woolton Drama Group pantomime -Arabian Knights. After successfully conveying more emotion and character than was thought to be possible as a door-knocker in Mort, this time she is sharing her performance as Onion Bhaji who is a snivelling little creep to the Sultan. Though one of her performances clashes with our AGM (she got a note from the Sultan), tickets will be available on the door for the other at 14.30 on Saturday 23rd January at All Hallows Church Hall, Allerton.
